Ebay Widget Contest Rules Confusion ?
Categories: Mxna
I was reading the contest rules , and i came across something that seems really confusing. At first they are saying to use their ebay api, but in the next point they say cannot use cached ebay data including shopping api .
WIDGET REQUIREMENTS:
Can anyone clarify this for me?
WIDGET REQUIREMENTS:
- Widget must be built using Adobe Flash or Flex;
- Widget must include eBay Data (as defined below) acquired through eBay Shopping API (using eBay Trading API is not allowed);
- Widget may not use cached eBay Data, (meaning any data returned by the eBay Shopping API, including, but not limited to, bid price, gallery image, Buy-It-Now price, listing end time, eBay Seller ID, and item description);
Can anyone clarify this for me?

Re: Ebay Widget Contest Rules Confusion ?
I think they're simply saying that the widget cannot cache any data returned via the ebay APIs, but must always retrieve that data via ebay each time the data is updated.

I emailed the eBay team asking them to comment on this blog.

Re: Ebay Widget Contest Rules Confusion ?
Did you see this rule also? "Widget may not incorporate any open source code". Well I guess using Flex 3 is out then! haha. Seriously though I don't quite understand that rule, especially for open source code that explicitly states you CAN use it for commercial purposes. Seems like there legal department went to town on the official rules. I mean they even added a "NO PURCHASE NECCESARY" clause??

Re: Ebay Widget Contest Rules Confusion ?
Hi Faisal, Jules is right. What we mean by not allowing the use of cached data is simply to help ensure all data being presented through the widget are most updated without streaming and the data came from eBay.

Re: Ebay Widget Contest Rules Confusion ?
Hi Dan, I do agree we could have worded the non-open-source clause better. It was not our intention to ban Flex SDKs. We were simply referring to the code created by a developer for the widget and not the SDK. Thank you very much for pointing out this issue. We will make the appropriate adjustments.

Re: Ebay Widget Contest Rules Confusion ?
Hi Dan, we are modifying the contest terms to exempt Adobe Flex under MPL from the no-open-source rule. The updated T&C's will be up tomorrow. Thanks again.
