Have your say on the next Android Book

Im currently in the process of beginning to write a new android book. Yea there are quite a bit of them about there, in my opinion I think I can write a better book focused more on getting things done rather then getting things you would rarely do done. Sure the usual content will be there, but i want to add more interesting stuff so the floor is open to anyone who is interested in android, What do you want from an android book. If your idea ends up being used Ill be sure to thank you in the book, so leave your name :) .
Lynda is offering free Catalyst Training. Check it out, its pretty cool. Especially since Catalyst is a completely new program, there is no previous experience we can bring to the table to get caught up with it.

Why the next 2 Halo Games: Reach and ODST don't excite me

Don't get me wrong, I Love halo. I bought both halo 2 and 3 on launch day. Stood in line for 6 hours to get my hands on the limited edition super pimped out copies. I just saw the trailers to the new halo games, Halo ODST and Halo Reach and I don't know the spark isn't there. I remember when I first saw the halo 3 trailer, I jumped up and down and now its 12:37 am and Im just looking at these saying cool and just not even bothering to go find out more about them or anything. Either I'm just getting too old for this stuff, or Halo is losing is charm. What are you thoughts?

Flash Builder 4, Flash Catalyst, & The Flash Platform

I can finally talk about this in the open!. Being on the prerelease for both these products (and many more cool ones coming ;) ) has been quite fun. You get to see the latest features and the goods and bads before the world sees it. Some of the cool things from Flash builder have been that they have really integrated the data service model into the IDE. You can create CFC's based on the data, do other cool stuff and it just makes life easy as pie. With respect to Flash Catalyst, while I havent checked out the build on Labs yet ( I think i got the same one from the prerelease site) one thing that bothers me and *again* I do not know if this is implemented in the build on labs and *i do not even know if i can talk about this*, but you cant edit the code view for the tool. Maybe this is just because its a beta, and they dont want anything being messed up but other then that little bug, Flash platform is a real kick ass tool. The funny thing is, now that F.C is released I cant seem to find any use for it! I havent taken any client work in the past few months because of AndSpot so I have nothing to test F.C against. Well Ill just try some stupid PSD off the web and convert it to a Flex Desgin. Great work Adobe!

G-uniX Hacks Flash To Run On Android

It was hard, took month and months but we finally did it. What we had to do first was use tamarain engine that Mozilla has and the Flash 9 Spec to develop a JAVA program to get flash to stick onto the android. It took months and months, mainly because it was just me a single developer doing it. I finally got it running last night but was too tired to post it. Here it is, a link to the main page, source code, downloads, etc etc all that cool stuff.
Open Letter To President Obama

Hello Sir, I know this post wont be directly sent to you, but i hope it finds its way. I would like to give you a good suggestion on the exciting change you are about to bring to America. It would be really really good, if you would hold bi-weekly podcasts with user chat and talk about what you have accomplished/are going to do. Kind of like a town meeting on what needs to be done next and what has been done but on a larger scale and online. This way, you still have that public interaction and keep the american public in the loop. This will also be a monumental step in democracy as we are not only voting our leader , but also helping him and in return being helped along the way. I hope you like this advice and read this email.

Thank you for your time,
Professionalism goes a long way in this Business

Me, you, and anyone who reads this blog is in the business of either marketing their rich creations to the web, or developing rich creations for the web. Either way, one thing we have to keep in mind is how to be professional. A while back I posted an entry about a certain client of mine who didn't pay me. His name was Barclay Layman and while my intentions were not to earn money or even approach him, my intentions were just to tell a story about how I got started in the programming world. What happened after the blog-post was Barclay contacted me and gave me the amount that was unpaid for. I find this to be really professional of him, and I look forward to working with him in the near future. I know he has some stuff coming out and so do I so (AndSpot) so well see how we can collaborate. Barclay Layman's a cool dude, and some misunderstanding got in the way 4-5 years ago, but its all cool now. I wish Barclay and his team all the good luck for their upcoming projects.

Guess the real name of Adobe Thermo and win a free copy of Flex 3 In Action

Yes, thats right. Guess the real name for Adobe's new cool wicked tool codenamed Thermo and win a free copy of Flex 3 in Action. The rules are simple :
1) Must live in Canada Or America
2) Guess the name either via commenting here (leave your name/email for sure) or emailing Faisal at g-unix.com with the subject THERMO CONTEST.
3) The person that guesses the closest to the actual name wins the book. It will be shipped out to you via Amazon. No charge for you :)

Let the guessing begin!
Thanks to Nathan for pointing out that people are submitting their emails. The admin console wasnt showing them, but there in the sql database. So keep on guessing :). PS Ryan has posted a hint, its in the comments!
Can't take this anymore -- Rant on Microsoft and Windows

I was reading MSFN today and i came across a couple of articles about some "COOL" (sarcasm ofcourse) features in windows 7 like desktop slideshow which generates slideshows from images or feeds. All that is well and good but what bothers me is why does anyone care , why is microsoft even saying this shit at conferences and stuff.

Honestly, a user will want to buy windows vista/7/8/9...[on and on] not because of the cool retarded gadgets it has, for example a stupid review on Windows 7 pre beta showed the cool new calculator, or the cool new minesweeper game. WHO Gives a shit, the same goes for steve jobs who for some reason instead of showing off the iPhone hardware, shows off a goddamn forsaken calculator at WWDC (thats a whole other rant).

Where was I, the user will want to buy a new OS based on how better it is in terms of performance compared to its predecessor. I'm not saying Microsoft doesnt make good products, and I'm also not saying Microsoft does not make changes performance wise to its operating systems, what bothers me is the amount of press and publicity stupid things like http://www.withinwindows.com/2008/11/03/windows-7-to-let-users-create-a-desktop-slideshow-from-files-rss-feeds/
get.

Leave that developing to the general developer Microsoft, stop wasting time developing that garbage, instead use those resources in proper kernel development, better security features. I'm really positive if Microsoft forgets about developing garbage like a shiny new calculator or a shiny new gadget bar , but spends time in the core windows performance features, users will buy the OS.

Even though I am not an American citizen, not African-American or even live in America , there is a sense of pride that comes when you see one of the finest politicians win the title of the president. Not only has Obama showed that he has what it takes to be a president , he has also shown that anything is possible if you put in some effort. Makes me proud as a citizen of this planet to see Obama will be changing this world for the better of it.

Tamarin-Tracing , Flash Player and Googles' Roboto, Mr.Android

Im getting the Android in a couple of days and the first thing that comes to mind is whether the Flash Player will be supported any time soon. Ive googled around a bit and read some stuff about how adobe has to develop a Java based flash player? Im not too sure about this, I just googled for a few minutes, but I did remember of a little thing Adobe gave Mozilla called Tamarin and I started to look into it. Tamarin for those who don't know is the open source AVM ( the thing that converts actionscript in bytecode for the flash player), and there is also another branch to Tamarin called Tamarin-Tracing which is (if im not wrong) for non-pc devices such as cellphones and game systems. All these things point to Flash player on android a reality, however there is the case of Google allowing the Flash Player on the platform, I mean its open source so they cant technically "not allow" anyone from developing something for the android but will google be happy with a prfopiertry technology on their platform?

Makes me wish the Flash Player was open source, if it was then on Day 1 of the Android Launch I could guarantee that the Flash Player would be on the platform running. I was initially a couple of years back not in favor for making the Flash Player open source but now I see the importance of open source. I mean its not like adobe is making any money off the flash player directly so whats the problem with making it open source. Were not saying make Photoshop or Flash IDE open source, were not even saying make Flex builder open source. These are the places where Adobe's Income comes from, so whats the problem with making something that your not making money off of (ie. Its free to download and use the flash player) not open source?.

Adobe, listen to your users. Make Flash Player open source and the world will love you even more.

I haven't died!

Im not dead , im still alive and working in flex. Currently im working for a start-up called Sensidea on a cool revolutionary product. Im also in McMaster University doing software engineering, plus Gaiql is still around and being developed. One thing particular about gaiql that was changed is the entire codebase! . During the alpha a couple of developers tested the hell out of it and realized it needed major optimization (well it was an alpha after all) . Because of the feedback I got , i started looking into better optimization algorithms to do sorting (mainly the tamarin source code, and some books i got at mcmaster) . I will be releasing some news on gaiql soon.

Plus Gaiql is going to implement some sql functionality to connect to your sql database , and i promise this will be the most secure way of doing this.

Crazy Flex RemoteObject Bug

I was developing a coldfusion/flex app today and i ran accross the most weirdest bug. The following code is pseudo code :

say if you have a remote object

<mx: remoteobjec id=something destination=ColdFusion >
<mx : method name=test result=result(event)>
<mx : arguments>
<arg1>inputtext.text</arg1>
<arg2>inputArrayCollection</arg2>
<arguments>
<method>
<remoteobjec>

This will work and send arg1 to the server but arg2 which is an array collection will be blank ,desptite the collection having over a 100 records

however if i send the same remote object like this , something.test(inputtext.text,inputArrayCollection)
it will work perfectly fine

werid ?

A New Captcha Alternative. Demo Included

Lately what i have been noticing is that these captcha files have been becoming harder and harder to decode till the point that they make you feel your working for the NSA trying to decrypt something. Plus its also a pain in the ass for people like one of my friends who has partial color blindness. Looking at all these features i came up with an alternative to captcha that uses flash and javascript, all you have to do is draw the right shape and you'll be a human. The javscript is not the most secure code in the world but that can be fixed, the point here is to be able to see how a simple captcha alternative can be implemented instead of making those silly words look like a lost language.

If I get enough attention on this, i will implement an API and etc to get it to production standards

The Javascript code is there as a quick mock-up , Under no circumstances will that type of Javascript code be used in the release if there should be one.

PS I havent decided on a name so suggest one!
also it will make errors, and I will fix that if i get enough attention on this by people who want a captcha alternative.
